(Kansas City, MO) – On June 26, U.S. Representatives Emanuel Cleaver, II (MO-05) and Sharice Davids (KS-03) hosted a press conference to announce that $14,880,000 in federal funding has been awarded to the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Buses and Bus Facilities Program, KCATA will receive $10,380,000 for renovation and upgrades to KCATA’s bus storage and battery electric vehicle charging facility. Additionally, KCATA will also receive a $4,500,000 Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity (RAISE) grant to evaluate an east-west, high-capacity transit connection and complete street enhancements between the University of Kansas Health System and Rock Island Corridor/Truman Sports Complex. Together, these grants continue to build upon the SAMPLE Corridor, announced by Cleaver, Davids, and local leaders last year.

“These are crucial investments for the SAMPLE Corridor, which are only going to attract even more federal dollars to the region as we continue to showcase the benefits of sustainable transportation in Kansas City,” said Congressman Cleaver. “I am incredibly thrilled to see these federal investments being made to support the SAMPLE Corridor and KCATA’s commitment to creating more efficient, cleaner, sustainable service – and I am proud to have supported the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that made these awards possible for our community. As I’ve said before, the SAMPLE Corridor promises to be not only be a local success in Missouri’s Fifth District of Missouri, but a sample of how the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law can cultivate sustainability and equity for the entire region. This is just the latest step in that process, and I look forward to future announcements as President Biden’s infrastructure bill continues to enhance critical infrastructure and support job growth in communities like Kansas City.”

"Better, safer, and more reliable transit systems benefit our economy and environment because folks use them to get to work and school, access health care, and more,” said Davids. “The bipartisan infrastructure law continues to provide concrete, climate-friendly investments in our community’s transportation needs. I was glad to work with Congressman Cleaver and KCATA, as well as other state and local leaders, to secure these funds and improve the quality of life for folks in the Kansas Third.”

“This is outstanding news for the region, and progress as promised,” said Frank White III, KCATA CEO. “Thank you to Representatives Cleaver and Davids and the entire Congressional delegation. These funds will go a long way toward modernizing KCATA’s facilities, resulting in greater efficiencies and sustainability.”

The Buses and Bus Facilities Program provides federal funding for transit agencies to buy and rehabilitate buses and vans and build and modernize bus facilities. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides nearly $2 billion through FY 2026 for the program. For FY 2023, approximately $473.1 million grants were available under this program.
